Budget

The real price: What your agency forgets to tell you

A shared shuttle usually costs around 150 to 200 DH per person round trip. A private four-seat taxi generally lands between 400 and 600 DH depending on where you leave from and how well you negotiate.

If there are 3 or 4 of you, the taxi often becomes the smarter option. The trap is the driver waiting outside the camp asking for 500 DH one way because they know you have no easy alternative.

Shared shuttles are often minibuses with limited legroom and tired air conditioning. You will wait while the other passengers finish their tea before the vehicle leaves. With a taxi, you leave when you want.

But the road can be rough in places, so the driver matters.

A realistic schedule that actually works

10:30 AM: Departure. Avoid leaving at noon unless you enjoy arriving in the hottest part of the day.

11:15 AM: Arrival. If you booked a shuttle, note the return time carefully. They do not wait for late passengers.

05:00 PM: Recommended return. After sunset, open-market taxi prices jump and shuttles get crowded.

Comparison

Shuttle vs private taxi

Shared shuttle

Cheaper, fixed times, group atmosphere.

Best for solo travelers.

If you want sunset and a late return, forget the shuttle: it will already be gone.

Private taxi

Flexible, drops you at the exact camp, more comfortable.

Essential for families.

With three or four travelers, the cost often becomes very competitive.

Guided reading

Who is each option really for?

Shuttle: budget travelers and couples who are not in a rush.

Taxi: groups of 3+, families with babies and anyone who wants proper door-to-door service.

Classic mistakes that can ruin the day

Taking a random street taxi without fixing the return price. You will overpay on the way back. Another mistake is thinking there is a public bus that solves everything. There is not.

The bus stops well before the desert and the final stretch becomes expensive or exhausting.

Book your taxi through your camp or a trusted local operator. The price is fixed and you have someone to call if something goes wrong. If you choose a shuttle, ask whether it truly serves your camp or leaves you at a central drop point.

Questions people rarely ask out loud

What time should you arrive in Agafay for the sunset?
Arrive between 5pm and 6pm depending on the season. Sunset over the desert occurs between 6:30pm and 8pm depending on the month. Check with your camp for the exact time.
How long does the camel ride last?
Generally 20 to 45 minutes depending on the package. Some camps offer longer rides (1.5 hours) that venture further into the hills.
Is the pool accessible to all or reserved for residents?
In most camps, the pool is included in the half-day or evening rate. Verify at booking that pool access is included.
Do you need to book the camel ride in advance?
Strongly recommended in high season. On site, availability is limited and prices may be higher than booking through the camp directly.
Is animal welfare ensured in Agafay camps?
This varies by camp. Serious establishments monitor working hours and feeding of their animals. Ask before booking if this matters to you.

How to choose without getting it wrong

Go by private taxi if you have the budget. It is the cleanest way to enjoy Agafay without stress. Use the shuttle only if saving money matters more than flexibility.

And forget unrealistic alternatives like hitchhiking, walking or trying to improvise with local buses.
