What this article is really saying

From Marrakech, Zagora and Merzouga tell two different desert stories. Zagora makes a first camp night possible within a two-day trip. Merzouga requires three days, but reaches the high Erg Chebbi dunes, the most spectacular image of the Moroccan Sahara.

« Notre circuit Marrakech - desert Zagora - Ouarzazate - Marrakech s'est très bien passé avec Omar Nadif comme chauffeur qui est vraiment très gentil. Il a tout géré sur les points de rendez vous, hôtel les pauses déjeuner. Au cours des trajets il faisait régulièrement des pauses avec de jolis points de vues et des petites explications. »

« We traveled with Abdul Ali from Marrakesh to Merzouga and back. It was a really pleasant trip. He was always on time and took care of all guests and their desires making a break, etc. We hope for a driver like him on our next trips as well. Our time in Merzouga was an amazing experience. We would recommend everyone who travels to marroco to do this trip to Sahara. It is an one time experience! For a VIP trip we paid 90€ each and it was worth every euro. »

The differences that genuinely change the trip - Marrakech and Morocco travel article | Itinerance Plus

Comparison

The differences that genuinely change the trip

The right choice depends less on the displayed price than on available time and the landscape you want.

Available time

Zagora fits into 2 days and 1 night.

Merzouga needs 3 days and 2 nights to remain coherent.

Desert scenery

Zagora is rocky, open and more arid.

Merzouga offers the great Erg Chebbi sand dunes.

Budget

Zagora is generally less expensive.

Merzouga includes an extra night and touring day.

Ideal traveler

Zagora for a first glimpse during a short stay.

Merzouga for travelers making the Sahara central to their trip.

Two days are not enough to visit Merzouga comfortably from Marrakech. An overly short offer almost always means excessive driving.

What happens during the circuit

Departure from Marrakech is early. The road crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass and enters the earthen landscapes of the South. Aït Ben Haddou is generally the first major cultural stop.

Toward Zagora, the route then follows the Draa Valley before camp. Toward Merzouga, the circuit continues through the Dades Gorges and Tinghir before reaching Erg Chebbi on the second day.

The camp evening combines camel ride, sunset, dinner and music. Comfort varies greatly: always check whether the tent has a private bathroom and whether drinks are included.
