What this article is really saying

Essaouira announces itself on arrival. The wind sweeping through the blue-and-white medina alleys is not an inconvenience: it is the soul of the place.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city still bears traces of its Portuguese trading post past and its crossroads of Berber, Arab, Jewish and sub-Saharan cultures. Here is how to plan your visit.

What it clarifies

Identify the format that suits your available time, budget and preferred pace.

Rule out options whose constraints do not match your expectations.

Compare duration, transport, inclusions and comfort level.

How to use it

Check how much time you truly have available before choosing.

Note your transport, pace and comfort preferences.

Then compare the experiences that match those priorities.

« Notre circuit Marrakech - desert Zagora - Ouarzazate - Marrakech s'est très bien passé avec Omar Nadif comme chauffeur qui est vraiment très gentil. Il a tout géré sur les points de rendez vous, hôtel les pauses déjeuner. Au cours des trajets il faisait régulièrement des pauses avec de jolis points de vues et des petites explications. »

« We traveled with Abdul Ali from Marrakesh to Merzouga and back. It was a really pleasant trip. He was always on time and took care of all guests and their desires making a break, etc. We hope for a driver like him on our next trips as well. Our time in Merzouga was an amazing experience. We would recommend everyone who travels to marroco to do this trip to Sahara. It is an one time experience! For a VIP trip we paid 90€ each and it was worth every euro. »

The blue and white medina, UNESCO listed

Listed since 2001 for its remarkably preserved Portuguese and Moorish colonial architecture.

Essaouira's medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, recognised for its remarkably preserved Portuguese and Moorish colonial architecture and its ramparts in excellent state of conservation.

The blue and white alleys, the ramparts facing the Atlantic and the fortified gates tell the story of a trading post that was long a crossroads of cultures.

Flavors

The fishing port and grilled seafood

One of Morocco's most active fishing ports.

The fishing port remains one of Morocco's most active. Seagulls circle tightly above the blue trawlers, fishermen unload the morning's catch, and sardine grillers line their embers along the Atlantic shore.

It is one of the most authentic and affordable dining experiences in Morocco: ultra-fresh fish and seafood at very reasonable prices, right at the port.
